Daria's resistance to talk about her situation only fuels the rumors about her status, leading many students to visit her under the assumption that she may not survive.

Forced to enter into a school-funded art contest, Jane and Daria create a poster depicting student life at the dawn of the millennium with a commentary on the lengths to which young girls will go in order to maintain a semblance of beauty. The poster sparks debate, leading Jane and Daria to protest the injustice in an effort to bring attention to the plight of the American teenager.

Moving to a new town allows people the opportunity to change who they are, to become someone brand new without previous misconceptions getting in the way. For Quinn this means a chance to cultivate a persona for herself that will welcome popular friends, while Daria maintains that her identity is all she has, and to change that now would be disrespectful to what she believes. Daria is a girl that knows who she is through and through, and anyone that would have her question that is not someone that's worth spending time on.

Daria confronts a Lawndale alum who belittles her peers on his visit to the school, making an enemy of him moments before he's tragically killed. The bulk of the student body is confused about their feelings, questioning whether they should mourn someone so outwardly horrible to them, and come to Daria for advice on dealing with depression.
